Will Trump Fire Dr. Fauci Before Election Day?

Dr. Fauci

So, what’s a fast and easy way to combat the novel coronavirus?

Some Penn State scientists says it’s the bottle of Listerine in your medicine cabinet.

Certain oral antiseptics and mouthwashes may have the ability to inactivate human coronaviruses. That is according to a Penn State College of Medicine research study.

The results indicate that some of these products might be useful for reducing the viral load. That is the amount of virus in the mouth after infection.

Keep in mind that the nose and mouth are major points of entry and spread for human coronaviruses.

The scientists tested several oral and upper throat rinses in a lab for their ability to inactivate human coronaviruses. The viruses tested were similar in structure to SARS-CoV-2.

The products evaluated include a 1% solution of baby shampoo, a neti pot, peroxide sore-mouth cleansers and mouthwashes.

The results, published in the Journal of Medical Virology, were very positive, to say the least.

Most promising was the 1% baby shampoo solution. This solution is often used by head and neck doctors to rinse the sinuses. It inactivated more than 99.9% of human coronavirus after a two-minute contact time.

Several of the mouthwash and gargle products also were effective. Many of them also inactivated over 99.9% of the virus after only 30 seconds of contact time. Others inactivated 99.99% of the virus after close to a minute of contact.

The next step will be to expand upon these results with clinical trials. These trials will evaluate whether products like mouthwashes can effectively reduce viral load in COVID-19-positive patients.

Even if the use of these solutions could reduce transmission of the virus by 50%, it would be huge.

In addition, future studies should include an investigation of what specific ingredients in the solutions actually inactivate the virus.

The Big News

Feds Cut Anti-Covid Workforce

The federal government has slashed the number of employees devoted to combating the coronavirus. At the peak, there were more than 50,000 federal employees deployed around the country. Now there are less than 20,000. The agency in charge of these efforts – Health and Human Services – says it has scaled back because its work is “completed”.

Trump Attacks Dr. Fauci, Again

President Trump attacked the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, Dr. Fauci, again. He described Dr. Fauci as “a disaster.” He added, “People are tired of hearing Fauci and these idiots, all these idiots who got it wrong.”  The president criticized Dr. Fauci and other experts despite signs that the nation is headed toward another coronavirus peak as hospitalizations rise again . . . and despite the fact that Trump’s Covid prognostications have been wrong.

P&G Raises Outlook, Thanks to Pandemic

Procter & Gamble boosted its full-year outlook today. This came as a global boom in house cleaning extended into the autumn. Shoppers seem willing to pay up for brand name cleaners  despite the economic downturn. Net sales in the quarter were 9% higher than a year ago on an organic basis. P&G now expects organic sales in its financial year to rise between 4% and 5%. The prior forecast was for a gain of between 2% and 4%.

Rapid Covid Test Almost as Good as a PCR Test

A new study conducted in San Francisco was good news for Abbott Laboratories. It found that Abbott’s $5 BinaxNOW rapid test may detect coronavirus nearly as effectively as the more complex and time-consuming PCR test. The study was small and resulting data have not yet been peer-reviewed or published. But researchers found that the rapid test — which gives results in just 15 minutes — detected all but one of the people who had high viral loads and were most likely to spread coronavirus.

The Coronavirus Numbers

Of the more than 40 million people infected worldwide, over half are from just three countries: Brazil, India and the United States. Here are the numbers from Tuesday at 8 a.m. ET from Johns Hopkins University:

  • 40,464,761 Infected Worldwide
  • 1,119,369 Deaths
  • 8,215,605 Infected in the U.S.
  • 220,134 Deaths in the U.S.

What’s Next

The global pandemic has fundamentally changed how people working and how children learn. This, in turn, has driven demand for what was once niche tech hardware.

Alphabet’s (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Google has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of this trend.

The shipment of Chromebooks grew more than 24% in the first half of 2020 to 10.3 million units, according to IDC data. This growth trend should run into 2021.

As recently as 2017, ChromeOS laptops accounted for just 7.7% of the overall notebook market. They were more than 11% of the market in the first six months of this year, IDC data showed.

Global shipments for the overall PC industry increased just 1.2% to 125.5 million units during the period, according to IDC.

Google began licensing its Chromebook to PC makers in 2011. The Chromebook is an educational purpose notebook that requires less computing capability and built-in storage than most other laptops.

The Chromebook runs on Google’s ChromeOS, which relies on the cloud to handle most storage and computing processes.

This allows Chromebooks to run on the same power-efficient mobile processors that smartphones use. This creates new opportunities for mobile chip makers as well.

Look for opportunities like this to make easy money during the pandemic.
